Well, it's been long time, no write - but a lot's been going on, and I think I
compensated by sticking a little video up there with our "behind the scenes of
Student News" footage. Well, I don't know if I've ever officially posted this on the
blog, but The Paper is DONE! *fanfare plays* And, yes, it
is on DVD... it just
seems that, well, we haven't quite gotten around to premiering it in a theater
anywhere. That is coming, however, and it'll be a great big thing with 76 trombones
and the whole lot. The Paper also made it into the Northampton YouthFilm Festival
- which is happening on February 21, 2009, which is coming up quick, quick! The
Paper took almost an entire year to pull off, and it was a grand, incredible thing -
but now Riverwolf has entered a new world as well; the world of instant
gratification. Yes, it sounds good doesn't it. Sounds like something you'd go out to
Wal-Mart at 3:30am on Black Friday to get if you didn't have to fear for your life... In
any case, we have a new project going now, "Student News." It's sort of a new
world. A world of deadlines. It's new, but it's great. So after our first episode aired
on Monday on ACTV, we all tried to get together for a meeting yesterday. A
Quaker retreat, a bad stomach bug, sore throats, and generally busy people
resulted in a fairly low attendance at the meeting - with only three of us physically
being present, with another via webcam and another by speakerphone - yes we
are very technologically savvy people! ;) There were definitely some technical
issues with the first episode, and a little lack of content, but it was our first show,
we all agreed, and we're going to do much better on the next one. It gets easier
each time. The original plan was to look at what kind of audience our show got,
how easy it was to do, and generally evaluate it, and then decide if we wanted to
continue it. Oddly enough, after the grueling hours, the shooting and reshooting, the
incredible time constraints, inventing and reinventing the show - all the things we
had to rise above - we all unanimously voted for continuance of the show. We had
tough times, we
will have tough times, but we're going to rise above it, I think, and
report the news for youth. Hey, it's what we do, we better damn well go do it...

Alright, I know - I have not been fulfilling my full duties as "The Slash" by updating
this blog. For all of the two or three people out there in the world who actually read
this, I apologize. My only excuse is that the time not spent writing this blog was
spent on innumerable other tasks, which led to a better product (in the form of
Student News), which, in its turn, led to happier customers. Student News has been
an exercise in pressure. While there was a lot of pressure in the films that I've done,
there was always more time, if necessary. Student News has been the ultimate
training ground for producing shows in a timely manner. While extreme effort is put
into every show by everyone on all sides, sometimes it is more important to get the
show out with the content and material available than to go through, become
nit-picky and comb over and over things. And, the crew and I have begun to find that
it is a lot less about the technical aspects of the show (like the 3D logo at the
bottom of the screen - oh yeah, we've got one, check it out!), and more about the
stories and the content. Perfect sound and audio can only get you so far. On
second thought, it could also just be that we are getting better at the technical
aspects... I hadn't thought of that one... huh... Oh, right, I was typing wasn't I? In any
case, Student News has been a wonderful, incredible, awful, stressful, brilliant,
hair-greying, mind-boggling experience - and I wouldn't want to miss a minute of it.
Most exciting is next week's episode (April 13th, 7pm), because the fourth episode
of Student News will be airing, and it'll kick off an hour of Riverwolf Productions
projects. We'll start with Student News and then go to the television premieres of
Keep Living and The Paper. It's a real don't-miss event. Even with a Television
show to produce every month, a heavy trimester-worth of homework, acting, guitar,
singing and fencing to take care of, I'm not stopping my other productions. This
summer - it looks like it'll be in July - Riverwolf Productions will finally begin shooting
a project which has arguably been in the works for a year - although not necessarily
in a screenplay format. I'm very pleased to be able to announce Riverwolf
Productions' third film will be The Bard. More information is to come, but just a
couple of fun tidbits about the shooting process for now: It looks to be a ten-minute
film, and we're planning to shoot it in one day. Yes, that's right. A one-day shoot (for
comparison Keep Living - 9 minutes - took 4 days to film). So eat that "The Paper"
director, with your 6 days of shooting spread out over 4 months! Oh, wait... oops...

Ah, summer, you've got to love summer. Well, it's only been two days of it so far, but
still, a whole load of work has already gotten done (or been started on), and I've still
got many a day left. For those of you who may worry that I will become more
overworked than I already am and die (although I'm sure there are very few of you
out there), have no fear - I
am going to go on vacation for some of this vacation...
next week in fact.
Student News came to a close last week, and I have to say, it
was a great season. We worked our butts off, and produced more time than all of
our previous projects combined. It was a different experience; one with few breaks
and a relentless schedule.
Student News will be back next September, with a
number of changes. Hopefully we will have more people working on
Student News,
a number of technical changes to the way we do graphics and run the show, and
also hopefully a more regular schedule for
SN to air. That all will be organized this
summer, but while all of that is being put together,
The Bard will hopefully be in
production, with filming either in July or August. One of those points has been
reached with
The Bard where either it will all come together and be awesome, or it
could fall through and never happen. Here at Riverwolf Productions we always do
the former, so I guess I better get to work finalizing things for that production! I just
looked over and saw the photograph we used in
Keep Living sitting on a stool - the
one with "Soldier Robert." How far we've come, eh? One 9 minute short film over
four days, to a 20 minute film which was accepted into a national film festival, to a
monthly news show with segments and guests, ending up with a total of
six
episodes.
It's sure been a long road, but we're not quite there yet. There's still a
ways to go, and we'll get there. Sooner than I think any of us expect we will. To
quote
Firefly (one of the best shows ever!), "We've done the impossible, and that
makes us mighty."
